As Black History Month comes to a close, it is important to continue appreciating what makes the Black experience what it is. Combs, broken brushes, durags and edge control are all words that the Black community associates with our hair. Because we live in a predominately white world, our hair gets policed and criticized as “unprofessional.” Noticing this, a student took it upon herself to show how diverse and amazing Black hair really is.

Cast of “Judas and the Black Messiah” discuss behind-the-scenes moments and more during a virtual college roundtable

The film follows the life of Fred Hampton (played by Kaluuya), the chairman of the Illinois Chapter of the Black Panther Party, and William O’Neal (played by co-star LaKeith Stanfield), the undercover FBI informant in the late 1960s. Although it’s centered around the inner workings of O’Neal’s betrayal, it also gives insight into what Hampton’s personal life was like as well as the work the Black Panther party did.

MICA hosts Women of Color Artists Panel to commemorate Black History Month

Jasmin Dixon felt distraught and confused after being unexpectedly laid off from an investment firm in D.C. She had been at this corporate job for a little over six months prior to her termination and was the only black woman in a department dominated by white men. For the entire duration of her lunch break, she cried on the phone with her dad as she worried about her recently purchased townhome and an upcoming vacation.
