The Black Explosion is the University of Maryland’s first and only Black student newspaper. Established in 1968, the Black Explosion works to conduct reporting on Black campus life, issues, and students. We hire students from all disciplines to work on our incredible staff! We’re looking for individuals with strong digital media, social media, writing, or business skills.

You do not have to be a journalism student to apply!!

Requirements

  • Strong engagement with UMD’s Black community

  • Able to attend weekly staff meetings with 1-2 pitches

  • Must produce 1 story a week OR provide weekly progress on an on-going assignment

  • Able to collaborate with other staff members

  • The News Editor plays a crucial role in shaping the narrative of campus and local news while ensuring that our reporting reflects the diverse perspectives and experiences within our community.

    Responsibilities:

    • Supervise a team of reporters covering campus and local news. Provide support, direction, and feedback to help them produce stories.

    • Coordinate coverage of various beats

    • Distribute assignments effectively, taking into consideration reporters' interests and strengths.

    • Edit articles submitted by reporters for clarity, accuracy, grammar, and adherence to AP Style guidelines.

    • Attend and actively participate in weekly staff meetings to discuss story ideas, review progress, assign new tasks, and address any challenges or concerns within the newsroom.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Proficiency in AP Style guidelines

    • Previous experience in a leadership role, such as managing a team or leading a project

    • Ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and effectively allocate resources to ensure timely delivery of news content

    • Engagement with the university's Black Community

  • The General Assignments Editor is responsible for managing and editing the work of freelance reporters. This individual should be interested in wide range of subjects as freelancers maybe interested in various subjects.

  • Staff writers are a core member of the Black Explosion team. They are responsible for participating in pitch meetings, interacting the with Black/UMD community, and producing stories for our readers.

    • Open to all students regardless of major

    • Writing sample required

    • Must come to weekly staff meetings and present 1-2 pitches to editors

    • Must be able to accept feedback from editors

  • Photographers are a core member of the Black Explosion team. They are responsible for assisting our reporters in their storytelling by capturing complementary photos for their work. They also have the opportunity to produce their own photo essays.

    • Open to all students regardless of major

    • Photo samples required

    • Must come to weekly staff meetings

    • Must be able to accept feedback from editors

    • Able to collaborate with the reporting team

  • Videographers are responsible for approaching storytelling differently from our reporters by using film as their medium. They are responsible for participating in pitch meetings, interacting the with Black/UMD community, and producing video for our views.

    • Open to all students regardless of major

    • Video sample required (1-3)

    • Must come to weekly staff meetings and present 1-2 pitches to editors

    • Must be able to accept feedback from editors

  • Copy editors are a core member of the Black Explosion team. They are responsible for reviewing the work of our reporters regardless of medium to ensure it fits the Black Explosion’s editorial standards.

    • Open to all students regardless of major

    • Writing sample required

    • Able to work scheduled hours

  • This is an experimental role @ the Black Explosion. We’re looking for an individual(s) to plan, develop, and produce engaging content on the Black Explosion’s Instagram Reels.

    • Open to all students regardless of major

    • Strong connection and engagement with Black campus life

    • Proficiency with Instagram Reels or TikTok

    • Must come to weekly staff meetings and present 1-2 pitches to editors

    • Work directly with the Engagement Editor

    • Creativity required
