Flashback Friday: Naomi Wilson on becoming Ms. Unity

On the evening of November 12, 2023, the University of Maryland attended an event that celebrated diversity, empowerment and unity. The Ms. Unity Pageant, hosted by SOUL: Sisters of Unity and Love and sponsored by the Nyumburu Cultural Center, turned out to be a spectacular showcase of talent and grace. The pageant's crown was  earned by junior information science major Naomi Wilson, who stood out not only for her poise and elegance but also her inspiring message.

The Journey to Ms. Unity

In an exclusive interview, Wilson shared insights into her preparation for the pageant. 

“I had to choreograph a dance, select the perfect song, and mentally prepare for the Q&A segment,” she said. 

Naomi expressed gratitude towards Ms. Carswell for her guidance, which significantly eased the participants' stress.

More Than Just a Crown

When asked about the significance of winning the pageant, Naomi's response reflected her ambition and pride. 

“Winning Ms. Unity was a personal victory during a transitional phase of college life,” she explained. 

Wilson also emphasized her desire to raise awareness about the Ms. Unity role and acknowledged the support of the Star Strutters, the Student Success Leadership Council, the Kappa Phi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta and the Black Business Association, along with her sponsor, SOUL.

Inspirational Figures

Wilson cited her parents as her primary inspirations, followed by the supportive UMD community. 

“Having supportive parents and being part of the UMD community has been vital in my journey,” she shared.

Embodying soul’s moto

Reflecting on SOUL's motto, “Seeking to unite minority women on campus,” Wilson related her active involvement on campus as a testament to this ethos. She emphasized her role in guiding and supporting others, aligning with SOUL's mission.

Concluding the interview, Naomi expressed a profound sense of accomplishment. 

“I feel great! Despite the challenges of junior year, I've witnessed tremendous personal growth. I feel ready to face the real world,” Wilson said.

The Ms. Unity Pageant was more than a competition; it was a celebration of diversity, unity, and female empowerment. By winning the pageant, Wilson symbolized these values and stands as a beacon of inspiration for many at UMD.
